Free mock theory test for Ireland
A full Irish driver theory test, the way it is set on the day: 40 multiple-choice questions, 45 minutes on the clock, and 35 correct answers to pass. Start it below. There is nothing to sign up for and nothing to pay.
The real test is marked simply. Every question is worth one mark, every question has exactly one correct answer, and you need 35 of the 40 to pass, which leaves room for 5 mistakes. There is no penalty for guessing, so an unanswered question is a mark thrown away. This mock follows the same rules: you can move between questions in any order, flag the ones you want to come back to, and submit when you are done or let the clock submit for you.
The 40 questions are drawn in proportion from the seven categories the Irish test covers, so a weak category shows up here before it costs you on the day. Each one comes with the correct answer and a plain-English explanation once you finish, and your score is broken down by category:
Today's set is the same for everyone and changes at midnight, so you can compare notes with a friend, and you can take up to 5 different mocks a day. When you are passing comfortably, book the real test at theorytest.ie; if you are not, practise the categories you dropped marks in and come back tomorrow.
The real theory test is taken in English or Irish. PassMonkey teaches the English wording the exam uses.
Ready when you are
Today's test #1 of 5 (7 October): same for everyone, changes daily. The clock starts when you press Start. You can flag questions to come back to, move in any order, and submit early. Unanswered questions count as wrong, as they do in the real test.
How this compares to the real test
The format is identical: 40 questions, 45 minutes, 35 to pass, one mark each, no negative marking for a wrong answer. Like the real test, you see one question at a time with a grid to jump around, you can flag questions, and nothing is marked until you submit. Some questions show a road sign or a picture of a traffic situation, as they do at the centre.
The questions themselves are PassMonkey's own, written to the Rules of the Road syllabus in the same style as the RSA's, which keeps its own bank private. The real test is taken on a touchscreen computer at a test centre, costs €45 for car and motorcycle categories, and is sat in English or Irish. You book it at theorytest.ie and bring the photo ID you booked with.
Passing here is a good sign, not a guarantee. Aim for 36 or better on three mocks in a row before you book. A pass certificate is valid for two years, so there is no rush to sit the test before you are ready, but a fail means paying the full fee again.
Mock test questions, answered
- Are these the real theory test questions?
- No. The Road Safety Authority does not publish its question bank, and nobody outside theorytest.ie has it. These questions are written in the style of the real test from the same Rules of the Road syllabus, so the topics, wording and difficulty match what you will see. PassMonkey is an independent study aid and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Road Safety Authority.
- How is the mock test scored?
- Exactly like the real one: 40 questions, one mark each, and you need 35 correct to pass, so you can get at most 5 wrong. A question you leave blank counts as wrong. When the 45 minutes run out the test is submitted as it stands.
- How many mock tests should I do before booking?
- Enough to score 36 or more three times in a row. One mark above the pass mark covers the nerves on the day. If you are failing mocks, go back to practising by category and read the explanation for every answer before trying again.
- Is the mock test free, and do I need an account?
- It is free and there is no account to create. You can sit up to 5 free mocks a day here, and the set changes every day. A free PassMonkey account adds the first 100 practice questions and 3 saved mock tests a day; Premium unlocks all 805 questions and unlimited tests.
- Does the mock test work on a phone?
- Yes. It runs in any browser on any phone with nothing to install, and the question grid, flag button and clock all fit a small screen. The real test is taken on a touchscreen at a test centre, so practising on a phone is good preparation.
